On the Nonlinear Convexity Theorem of Kostant
A classical result of Schur and Horn [Sc, Ho] states that the set of diagonal elements of all n x n Hermitian matrices with fixed eigenvalues is a convex set in IRn. Kostant [Kt] has generalized this result to the case of any semisimple Lie group. This is often referred to as the linear convexity theorem of Kostant: picking up the diagonal of a Hermitian matrix is a linear operation. This resul...
متن کاملA Schur-Horn-Kostant convexity theorem for the diffeomorphism group of the annulus
The group of area preserving diffeomorphisms of the annulus acts on its Lie algebra, the globally Hamiltonian vectorfields on the annulus. We consider a certain Hilbert space completion of this group (thinking of it as a group of unitary operators induced by the diffeomorphisms), and prove that the projection of an adjoint orbit onto a "Cartan" subalgebra isomorphic to Lz([0, 1]) is an infinite...
متن کاملOn a generalized Connes-Hochschild-Kostant-Rosenberg theorem
The central result of this paper is an explicit computation of the Hochschild and cyclic homologies of a natural smooth subalgebra of stable continuous trace algebras having smooth manifolds X as their spectrum. More precisely, the Hochschild homology is identified with the space of differential forms on X, and the periodic cyclic homology with the twisted de Rham cohomology of X, thereby gener...
متن کاملLoop Grassmannian cohomology, the principal nilpotent and Kostant theorem
Given a complex projective algebraic variety, write H•(X,C) for its cohomology with complex coefficients and IH •(X,C) for its Intersection cohomology. We first show that under some fairly general conditions the canonical map H•(X,C) → IH •(X,C) is injective. Now let Gr := G((z))/G[[z]] be the loop Grassmannian for a complex semisimple group G, and let X be the closure of a G[[z]]-orbit in Gr. ...
متن کاملThe starlikeness, convexity, covering theorem and extreme points of p-harmonic mappings
The main aim of this paper is to introduce three classes $H^0_{p,q}$, $H^1_{p,q}$ and $TH^*_p$ of $p$-harmonic mappings and discuss the properties of mappings in these classes. First, we discuss the starlikeness and convexity of mappings in $H^0_{p,q}$ and $H^1_{p,q}$. Then establish the covering theorem for mappings in $H^1_{p,q}$. Finally, we determine the extreme points of the class $TH^*_{p}$.
